Environment & Energy Committee creates five new sub-groups

ACEC Ohio's Environment & Energy Committee is forming five new subcommittees so that the Council can more effectively respond to the wide variety of issues that arise in the environmental arena.

"There's just so much going on in the environmental area, across such a wide spectrum, it's difficult for a committee to keep track of it all," said E&E Committee Chair Richard J. Iafelice (CT Consultants, Inc.) "which is why we're establishing these five subcommittees, each of which will have a specific focus."

The five subcommittees and their chairs are:

The Environment & Energy Committee has been extremely active.  In June, committee representatives met with Ohio EPA Director Scott Nally to discuss a wide range of issues.  Last month, OEPA Chief Engineer George Elmaraghy met with the committee and reviewed changes in the agency's NPDES permitting and enforcement policies, as well as possible future changes in anti-degredation rules (download meeting minutes).

David Mohr, chief engineer at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will join in the committee's next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, December 1, in Columbus.

In addition, the committee is investigating the feasibility of sponsoring a seminar or workshop focused on the new Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, the national organization created by ACEC, APWA and ASCE to develop formal sustainability rating systems for horizontal construction projects.

ACEC Ohio members who would like to join the Environment & Energy Committee should contact Chairman Iafelice, one of the five subcommittee chairs listed above, or ACEC Executive Director Don Mader.
